So, you've seen the advertisements, the baseball caps, the giant machines, the "space helmets", but is there really any scientific backing to lasers for hair growth? What's a scam and how do I tell? Well friend, you've come to the right place. Our certified Trichologist, Sam, is going to lay out some information here so you can make an informed decision about your purchase.

What Is Low-Level Laser Therapy for Hair Growth?

Low Level Laser Therapy or LLLT is defined as “a cool laser that effectively stimulates the scalp area and causes an increase in blood flow called "Photo-bio-stimulation”.

Photobiostimulation (PBS) is the biochemical, non-thermal effect that results from the exposure of living tissue to various dosages of energy at varying wavelengths emitted from low-level lasers.

Now I know this is all kind of a mouth-full, so let's just talk about the 5 effects it does to CREATE the hair growth, working underneath the scalp. This is important to remember when picking a laser, you want to be sure it has the correct diodes to penetrate the scalp and work at the dermal papilla. The proven wavelength of light for the treatment of hair loss is 650nm, 4.5-5mw power output.

The 5 Effects That Occur During LLLT Treatment

1. ATP An increase in ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and protein synthesis, causing an increase in osmotic cellular function.

2. Cell Growth Improved cell proliferation.

3. Protein Growth Increase in protein synthesis, causing a change in cell membrane permeability.

4. Circulation Increased blood circulation by 54% after only one treatment, providing a supply of nutrients to the hair follicle.

5. Capillaries Clinically proven to increase the size of the capillaries under the hair follicle.

LLLT's Proven Track Record

40+ Laser Hair Loss Treatment Devices have now been cleared (approved) by the FDA to promote hair growth.

This includes devices and studies for both men and women with 93%-100% growth.

> 100% of the subjects saw an increase in hair growth.

> 97% saw an increase in hair count by 20%

> 77% saw an increase in hair count by 51%

It's Important to Know the Difference Between a True Laser Vs. LED

LED is seen being used in skincare and has amazing benefits! LED only reaches the surface of the skin. This means it does not penetrate deep enough under the surface for hair growth as shown in the visual here.

LLLT penetrates deep down to the dermal papilla to stimulate hair growth and is proven to be 93-100% effective.

When purchasing a laser device for at-home use, be sure to look for a quality, 100% laser device. Price does not always equal quality. The "top" Amazon hair growth device markets itself as both "laser and LED" being is sold at around $1,000. You are looking for HAIR GROWTH, which means you need lasers, not LEDs. LED looks visually the same and is much cheaper than a true laser diode. The best thing to do is consult with a certified Trichologist on which at-home laser device is going to be the best for your needs.

Are You Saying an At-Home Laser Device is All That I Need for Successful Hair Growth?

While a laser device is an amazing tool for hair growth, it is not a "one-size-fits-all" to hair rejuvenation. To have the best results with your journey, I suggest a multi-therapeutic approach. What one tool does, the other does not. You may have a friend that had great success using a product line, but you find yourself not making the same progress with it. If you want all of your bases covered, you need to be using a system specifically set up for your personal hair loss needs.

Finding a Trichologist that is able to see what the underlying issue is and what type of hair loss you have is going to be extremely helpful.
